Deploying waste management systems in the Himalaya

In the world’s highest mountains, waste management is both an environmental and a logistical challenge.
Since 2024, Travel Wise has been contributing to the Clean Everest 360° initiative, coordinating the deployment of an integrated waste management system on both the Nepalese and Tibetan sides of Mount Everest.
Bringing its expertise in responsible and adventure tourism, Travel Wise applies a practical, field-based approach to sustainability. This involvement has helped build a strong network among mountain tourism stakeholders in Nepal, working hand in hand to:
- Construct a material recovery facility at 4,000 meters in Pangboche.
- Develop an environmental charter considering key challenges on the Nepalese side of Everest.
- Implement concrete waste management actions with expedition agencies directly in the field, at Everest Base Camp.
Reducing plastic pollution in Thailand’s tourism industry with UNDP
In Thailand, where tourism is a major contributor to the economy, plastic pollution has become one of the sector’s biggest challenges. The tourism’s growth has brought an heavy environmental plastic footprint, particularly in coastal and island destinations, where it’s poorly managed.
Within a UNDP-led initiative, Travel Wise contributes as an international consultant, bringing its expertise in sustainable tourism and its strong understanding of on-the-ground operational realities. The mission focuses on identifying practical solutions to help tourism businesses and local authorities reduce plastic use, improve waste management systems, and promote circular economy approaches.
